NASA hires astronauts (usually former pilots for the military), astronomers (in pretty much every field, from planetary to high energy to biophysics), physicists, computer scientists, and engineers.

But my friends who work at NASA don't like it very much. Too much security, they expect you to actually show up every day on time, and even the ones with PhDs are sharing cubicles.

I recommend a university or national lab. Your own office, no security, all the time off you want, and pretty much when you want it. I'm not spending 10 years in college so that I have to dress up and show up for work at 9 am.

Directly working for NASA, approximately 15,000+, working for contractors 20,000+.

All are in some way related to manned or unmanned space programs.

Eri is right about the pay. Don't go into astronomy for the money! However, having said that, I would not change it for a million dollars! I am engaged in teaching and research, and I actually look forward to work each day. I consider it a privilege to teach undergraduates and to have some of their assistance in my research work.
