Cold absorbs heat I think. Ice cubes in a glass will absorb the heat from the liquid, as the heat in the water is a form of energy which the ice doesn't have. However, there is no energy in the ice which can be transferred to the liquid.

Heat always transfers from the warmer object to the cooler object. Objects get colder by losing heat, never by gaining "cold". Even air conditioners work by removing heat from the air.

Think of heat like water flowing down hill. Heat flows from warmer to colder matter.

more cold is applied to the heat, or more heat is applied to the cold.
