I haven't read any of the authors you mentioned but I like Michele Andrea Bowen, who has written "Church Folk" and "Second Sunday." Her newest is "Holy Ghost Corner," which I haven't read yet but plan to. Her website is www.micheleandreabowen.com. She's a Christian African American author.

"The Color Purple" by Alice Walker, of course. Both the book and the movie are powerful. Have kleenex handy!

"I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings," Maya Angelou's autobiographical account of her childhood, is good but also sad.

I've never heard of any of those people, but there is Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Baldwin's Another Country, Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Toomer's Cane, Schuler's Black No More... hmm those are the big ones I can think of right now.
