I lost the keys to my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. We purchased and had keys reprogrammed. Locksmith said he cleared the system and not to use the old key if we found it or it would put the car in THEFT mode. Well, we found the key and the key fob. Can we use the keyfob without the car going into theft mode?... What is theft mode anyway?

It will immobilize the engine. If you have the owners manual, they may tell you how to program the key fob. I have forgotten the routine, but a dealer could tell you, but may want to charge you for the info. It is something like turn the key on and off 8 times and stop with it in the on position.

The worst that could happen with the key fob is that it won't unlock the vehicle at all. If it still operates the locks, you don't have to worry about any alarm issues from it; go ahead and use it.

"Theft" mode only happens when someone activates the ignition without the right key in the ignition switch. A transmitter chip inside the key sends a code to the anti-theft system when it's inserted into the switch. If the key switch is turned and the anti-theft system doesn't receive the right code, then "theft" will start flashing on the instrument panel (or the LED light near the windshield will start to flash) and the starter will not engage.

If you try to use the wrong remote fob, it won't activate theft mode; only turning the wrong key in the ignition will do that. (If this wasn't true, theft mode would be activated any time you parked next to someone else's Ford in a parking lot, and they came and unlocked their car with the remote).

You can use the key fob. The old key has a chip in the key and that will set off the alarm. Using the fob will be fine.
