This question is referring to the fetal pig...The trachea carries air directly to the lungs. The trachea is made up of cartilage with a “ring” shape all the way down. Hypothesize how this ring-like structure helps the function of carrying air to the lungs.

It won't collapse under pressure if, say, the pig swallows some food, or bends its neck.

Rings keep the airway open. That's all there is to it.
