I recently just left our local hospital with my 7 month old who was in PICU for 4 weeks and my heart went out to the other children I saw there. I would like to get some blankets together for the children. Most don't have visitors all the time and the baby blankets are really thin. They range from ages zero to 18 but I don't have any experience with sewing or anything. If anyone would like to help me please let me know. I would really like to bless as many children as possible. Thank you so much for your consideration and I look forward to seeing what God is going to do through all this.

Google on Project Linus and look for a group in your area. Project Linus provides children in hospitals with quilts and afghans to take home with them and can always use someone to help make them. My g'daughter came home with a lovely quilt when she was in for day surgery last fall.

You could knit blankets, hats, booties, etc and donate them to your PICU. Ask what requirements in terms of fiber type, yarn weight, etc they would prefer. Usually easy care (superwash, acrylic blends, etc) are preferred.

An easy blanket can be knit on the bias in garter stitch. Cast on 3 stitches. Knit 1 row. Knit 1, yarn over, knit to end of row. Repeat the last row until the blanket is the desired diagonal size. Then Knit 1, Knit 2 together twice and knit to end of row. Repeat until 3 stitches remain and bind off. Weave in ends.

The reason the blankets are thin is so they won't be too heavy. Go right to the source and ask the NICU staff what kind of material they would use. Then all you have to do is buy the material, cut it and put something soft around the edges.

Being that you have such a warm loving heart that wants to do something meaningful as a gesture of compassion & gratitude.... I would truly consider learning to loom knit &knit them some semi-light wgt blankets.
Loom Knitting is so easy even children are doing it with ease. By doing so, you can make different sizes, different wgts, different textures.... heck even different shapes so each child would have their own special blanket.
Plus it is something rewarding to do with that quiet time while your own baby is napping.
We have a free loom knitting classroom where we teach loom knitting patterns & techniques. Teachers are all volunteering their time & talents.
You are more than welcome to join us!

I agree with Lisa! Those fleece blankets are very warm and very easy, and they look sooooo nice! I just learned about making those this past weekend, and since then have seen quite a few that mothers have made. They all said they're very easy!
