There is a 48 hour rule, which government statistics assure is generally adhered to. It basically says that a patient should expect to be given an appointment with an unspecified doctor within 48 hours if requested. You might discuss this with your practice.

i know just what u mean.... last friday i started feeling really ill. i had a high temperature, very sore throat, swollen tonsils, and i generally felt like cr*p. i knew that i really should see a doctor, but i didn't bother calling for an appointment as i knew there'd be non available until after the easter weekend.... instead i have suffered in pain with tonsillitis, and it's lead to me getting a nasty ear infection, and a chest infection. i finally got to see the doctor today (thursday), and was given pain killers and anti biotics. that's all very well, but it would have been a damned site more helpful if i'd been given that medication at least 3 days ago - if not sooner. it's not as though i can just walk into my nearest A & E department, which is what they tell u to do if u are desperate.... the nearest hospital to me is about 15 miles away, and i was not well enough to be driving anywhere...... i do appreciate the fact that this country has an NHS service, and we get better treatment than there is available in many other countries, but there are a lot of problems with the system.......

At our doctors you ring in the morning and get an appointment the same day. If you want to make an appointment in advance you might have to wait 3 weeks

My doctor sees me within 48 to 72 hours. He will even see me on the day I call if I have a good reason. He will see me during his lunchtime or after 5pm. The key is only ask to see him on the same day I call only if it is important.

But yes,I have had doctors in the past that it might take 3 weeks to get an appointment. That's when I find a new MD and develop a good relationship with him, his nurse and.....the appointment secretary!! Get the hint?

Yeah I'm with you on that one. I know that I will have got better before my appointment comes round so there's no point in going! I might book an appointment now for June, just in case!

My doctors advice patients to ring at 8am as soon as they open, so you do and it's engaged until 9 am then you get through to get told they are fully booked up. You don't get the option at my docs to book in advance it's all got to be done on the day. Chances are you will probably die before they get to see you.
