the Equal Rights Amendment was narrowly defeated during the Carter administration---Carter supported it---and one factor was busloads of Morman women going from state capital to state capital, posing as, say, a native of Ohio, and lobbying state legislators to vote against anything that might, say, put women in the trenches in combat or make football teams become half female.

I believe the ERA was the briefest amandment ever offered to the Constitution, something like, "No one shall be denied equal rights on the basis of gender" Actually, I believe the origional text was shorter.

the ERA failed because it's unnecessary. remember too, if you actually get equal treatment under the law, then if a man accuses his wife of domestic battery she will go to jail..wait, she does..looks to me like you've achieved your purpose
