Funny, I asked that question a little while ago. This actually happened to me and I wanted to know what people thought. I was called a murderer.
I guess you have to know why it had to happen. Who is it you killed and was he or she worth the lives of six others? No matter how bad this person may be, he or she was probably loved and will be missed very much. In their eyes, you are a murder. In the eyes of those you saved, you are a hero. But are these six people good people or bad people. No matter how great they may be, someone somewhere and a bunch of their friends will say they are bad people and you are a murderer.
In the end, the numbers are on your side and you will be called a hero. But you are still faced with the fact that you took a human life. Something no act of heroism can make peace with and you will remember that instant the rest of your life. Believe me.

Well, that depends on why he killed the one person...was it because that one person was going to kill the other 6? If so he's a hero. If he just killed him out of cold blood, and then somehow saved 6 people on accident he's a murderer.

Depends on the people. If he kills the president, then saves 6 terrorists, he would probably be put in jail for life, of something of the sort.
Vice versa, (okay, 6 presidents to save is quite a lot) he probably wouldn't get in that much trouble.

if that man he murdered was not harming anyone and was kill maliciously he's still technically a hero, but socially he would be regarded as a murderer because murder is such a strong action that it outweighs any good that a person has done in their life. when people try murderers, it doesn't matter how many good things they have done before in their life, they're still going to jail.

I'd say he's both... but if I can only say one, I'd say he's a murderer because even though he killed only one person, it wouldn't be fair to say that person did not count... he saved people, but he is also responsible for murder, and he would be charged for it... despite the fact that he saved six people.

It depends on the circumstances. Why did he kill someone?
If he killed someone holding 6 hostages, then hero
If he killed someone he was robbing and saved 6 people in a different incident, then a murderer.

The two circumstances are not linked together so they had two separate motivations. He could have attempted not to save himself but to committ suicide or improve his image with the courts.
He's a Murderer with a socialy responsibile nature.
