They were early french traders in Canada, who traded animal furs and other stuffs with the natives. then they take those and sell them in europe.
two things are important, first, they established early european relationships with the native and allowed further collaborations.
second, they exploited the natives a bit, after a while of business as they became greedy.

The fur traders made early Canada. They were the explorers, the founders of towns and the establishers of trade. No company did more for Canada than the Hudson Bay Company. In addition, they were also the ones who established communication with the Native Americans, and unlike in the USA the fur traders wanted to trade with the Indians, not exterminate them.
