You're absolutely right about this (the freezing — and your personal choice).
The best story about this occurred in the Cold War period. Eugene Burdick (author of FAIL SAFE, which was made into a movie about an accidental nuclear war) was a judge at the San Francisco Film Festival and was entertaining Sergei Mikahilov (a Stalinist hack, the father of the post-Soviet Russian film director). He wanted to get to know Mikhailov, so he invited him to his home, a large estate in the Berkeley hills.
Shortly after Mikhailov arrived, when everybody was sitting on the patio, Burdick went into the house and came back with what looked like a large cardboard container of orange juice. He chipped away at the container and revealed a block of ice around a bottle of vodka. "I like my vodka ice cold," he said. "Don't you?"
Mikhaiilov agreeed -"Konechna!" "Just so," said his translator. And then Gene poured straight vodka for all of us. I was the fourth person on that occasion — a merry time was had by all. By the time we all got together, the next night, to start viewing the movies, ground had been prepared for a triumph of personal diplomacy in a very difficult time. The third judge, from Italy, didn't know what had hit him.
I don't know why I remember this now. Probably because I saw, today, that we lost another major figure of that period, Kurt Vonnegut. Gene Burdick departed a long time ago — heart attack while playing tennis (in 1965 — according to Wikipedia, he was 46 at the time of his death). Far too soon, but he had a full and joyous life. And he did his bit in bringing the horror of those times to an end by creating images in people's mind of what could happen and the consequences.

Now I'm drooling! I don't need anything but the beer. I'll have 3 slammed down in less than 5 minutes, to start with.
