This issue can be debated on and on for centuries to come and we will be no closer to an answer than we were 200, 100 or 50 years ago when people were STILL degrading black people.
The problem is that as a community, we STILL see in color and it will remain that way until we realize that race does not mean a DAMN thing except where your ancestors originally came from.
Let's take me for example, (simply because I don't have any other person to use):
My ancestory is Dutch German, German, French, Irish, English and Norwegian. My ancestors migrated from several North Eastern countries. I am all white, with absolutely no other heritage.
What does this make me?! An American. I am no more, or no less, American than any one else who was born here, except that my ancestors came her in 1912, my Great, Great, Grandmother was supposed to be on the Titanic, but because of chicken pox she was banned. (WHEW!! That was close!!) and have been here since.
The point I'm trying to make here is that my heritage is mixed, as I suspect most Americans are the same. That does not give me any less or more rights to this great nation of ours.
America was founded on diversity. It was why the pilgrims settled here in the first place and why they dumped the tea overboard. They wanted the freedom to practice their faith the way they wanted without any outside interference. They didn't want anybody telling them what they could or couldn't do or say.
Yet, as Americans we also took away that basic right from the black people and bonded them into slavery and racism against their will, which is exactly what the puritans were fighting agains when they came here.
No wonder people call us hypocrites, because we ARE!!
We also did the same thing to the Indians, wiping out entire races of people all for the sole purpose of stealing their land and putting their people into slavery!
Children were ripped from their Mothers arms back them and sometimes as the children watched, the parents were shot after being torn apart.
These children were forced into camps and were not allowed to speak in their native tongue and were also put into bondage, Hmmmm can anybody say: HITLER?!
Yet, as Americans, we condemn other countries for doing the same things we did and have the audacity to say that we are not like that and would NEVER commmit such mental and physical anguish on any man, woman or child. BULLSHIT!!
So, now y'all are debating the firing of that man for making a racial slur. The question is: Is this a deliberate racial slur? Well, of course it was. Come on folks get real! He knew what it meant and he knew the consequences of what he said. He was fully aware of the fact that some people would find that offensive and would be angered about it.
Now, the problem I have with this is I have heard numerous black people call each other the "N" word and nobody flinches at all. It used as a term they call their bretheren. Yet, let a white person use it, and watch the sparks fly. Isn't this called hypocritical?! Exactly what you condemned us for?! Hmmm, sound familiar?!
I heard alot of talk, back when I was a kid, about that word so I decided to look it up in the American dictionary and do you know what I found? Anybody want to guess?
The meaning of that word is: (Drum roll, please) an ignorant person, pure and simple, end of story. So, why would people want to call each other an ignorant person AND why would you protest about the use of a word whose termonology is out dated?! It no longer means what it did back when blacks were in slavery. We have taken the word and turned it around to mean something totally different.
Now, as far as the term "Nappy Headed" What does this MEAN to YOU?! Really, seriously. Take some time to consider it. Do you find it, taken just like that, to be offensive in itself? What is that? Who is Nappy headed? Can whites be nappy headed as much as blacks? What about Asians or how about Hispanics? I know my Mom had the thickest head of hair when she was young and when she first woke up in the morning she was..... NAPPY HEADED!! That's right folks, A WHITE WOMAN with a Nappy head!! Oh- no shoot me!! (roll eyes)
So now let's move on to the next word "Ho" ok, well, first things first, is that EVEN a word? I mean really folks, is that in the American dictionary at all?
Ok, so what does it mean, well, AGAIN, I've heard a certain group of people (OMG) (roll eyes) blacks, use that word to describe a girl or woman from their neighborhood. It's not neccesarily used derogatory, although sometimes it is, it is used as a term of endearment as best as I can guess.
So why, if we use these words for different purposes, does one group find it offensive when another group use it?!
Sometimes I honestly think it is to continue the perpetuation of racial hatred.
Someone answer me this, Is there really ANY purpose in this day and age to state what race you are on an application of any kind for any purpose?! I don't understand why we continue this practice when we all know how barbaric it is. It is an out dated practice that had a purpose at one time and no only serves to continue racism on a higher level.
What I am talking about it this, let's say I and a young woman who is not as qualified and happens to be colored both apply for the same job, we both put down our race on our application. The company is still concerned about racism and recently had a small incident. So, the person doing the hiring, instead of wanting to have another confrontation on his hands, decides to hire the other young woman simply because she is colored and I'm not and he was afraid he would be slandered by her for not hiring her although I was more qualified.
So is there such a thing as reverse racism?! Yes, folks there is. It is alive and well and in denial as much as it was when those kids were being beat simply because of the color of their skin.
Do I agree with the writer of this question? To some extent, yes and to some extent, no.
Mr. Sharpton obviously knew his comment would hit some people below the belt. And of course, it did. The ironic thing is that it didn't affect the group it was aimed at in the first place. The captain of the girls team said they didn't expect that moron to be fired over it because they didn't take offense to it, but some civil rights group had to go and blow it out of porportion instead of taking it for what it was:
A stupid comment from a "N***er" white boy!

Exactly Imus was fired. He was "employed" by a major network and he offened alot of people. Rappers are not hired or fired they can be "let go" meaning a recording studio will not work with them again. I'm sure if it was a Black Rapper who said some offensive things and he was "employed" by a network he would have been fired as well. But now let me ask you this. Why do you care so much about this guy in the first place? Do you listen to his show? Do you know him or what he is about or are you just riding the coat tails of others because you have nothing better to do but ***** and moan. Remember this is my freedom of speech to call you out like this.

Personally, I think black people and white people should be bonding in America now. We have a common problem-illegal immigrants!!!! I stress the word "illegal".
Imus will be all right. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will never change, they're making too much money-somehow.

Mr. "sick" white male, I am sure you are not at all upset by the comments of "your Leader - Don Imus" but we in the black community have an obligation to support and defend our children. Most of us (in the black community) do not support the Hip Hop Gansta Rap culture, as a matter of fact I didn't know there was a 3-6-Mafia until they won the Academy Award for best song (what a joke). Most of the Gansta Rappers cannot spell disrespect or know the meaning of decorum but these are the "role models" Mr. Imus chooses to follow/emulate? This is a sad state of affairs.
When Mr. Imus referred to the young women as "nappy headed ho's" he was making derogatory remarks about the basketball players who meet the description of "nappy headed" and that would not describe the white women on the team. Neither Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson represent me but I applaud their efforts to bring Mr. Imus to task after his many years of disparaging comments about the black community in general and specifically the racist and sexist comments about the Rutgers Ladies Basket Ball Team.
Your comments let me know that there continues to be a "white against black" mentality in this country so the black community must remain vigilant and ready to respond to the fallout this kind of attitude brings.

Imus didn't lose his freedom of speech. I don't believe he was arrested for his comments. Like it or not Imus is an employee of a corporation, as an employee he must adhere to corporate standards. Granted those standards tend to not be enforced for on air personalities, but they do exist. Imus was fired because CBS started getting complaints from sponsors. Sponsors start leaving and CBS makes no money. This could have effected not only their radio, but their TV revenue. Imus became a liability.

Imus will only become more successful after this whole thing. Most people west of the Mississippi never heard of this guy until this incident. Today he is the most famous radio personality, he will easily find another job and will most likely be syndicated in large markets everywhere in the US. I personally want Al Sharpton to make a public apology to the Duke Lacrosse players (Which won't happen). After which Al Sharpton should be fired from his job.

Imus still has freedom of speech. He just can't air his feelings on those radio or TV channels because those companies are taking a hit because of it. The ramifications of what he said are affecting others, and they shouldn't have to suffer because of his prejudices. If he wants to exercise his freedom of speech and have other people hear him, he needs to start his own newspaper or his own radio station. Simple as that.
As for taking freedom of speech away from white people, I'm white and Imus did not represent me or the way I feel. My freedom of speech was not affected in the least by his firing, and obviously neither was yours.

White people still own most of mainstream media, practically everyone (it's up to the 90%'s) on news shows are white, black people are on a few dinky comic shows, BET has one and BET is owned by white people. Basketball...yup, owned by white folk. Ice T's rhymes even are on Time Warnner Records, white folks too. Feel so sorry for you though, I know John Wane died and that musta made you feel bad.

I think that racism is still alive. You're creating this conflict for yourself though. If you wanna call your friend your ***** or your cracka I think that's fine. I chill with madd multicultural people and we have no problem with race what-so-ever. People need to get over themselves, and you need to stop being so scared to say waht you want. If IMUS offended someone then I think that person should come foward and beat his *** whatever whatever. Stop being a scared *** cracka and punch a hispanic in the face or something damn.
