The concertmaster (or concertmistress) plays an A - the note all strings tune to.
Playing a B flat to tune band instruments requires the A string to be tuned first, and then the first finger to be in the exact right position.
The concertmaster/concertmistress is the head of the orchestra, so they have the honor of playing the tuning note.

Concert A off of his/her 'A' string.
1st chair violin is also known as the concertmaster. Tradition calls for it. He is usually the most accomplished musician in the orchestra -- with the best 'ear' (or the best electronic tuner, ha ha).
The bad thing about concert A, is... some instruments (e.g. trombone) can't tune to 'A'.

four strings, one for each and then some flats and sharps to make sure they are in tune. the strings are e, a, d, g.
