we always made 13 a special birthday party for my girls. in most culture 13 is not just the "finally a Teen age" but it is the age of adulthood- the age of accountability and the age that one is no longer considered a child. We don't really view 13 yo this way in our culture, but I believe there is merit to this. At 13 I believe a child should become a little less play minded- not that they have to be an adult but they are beginning to become who they are, relationship dynamics change and goals change- more responsibility is given as well as more privilege. 16 can be another defining birthday but I really believe in making thee 13th birthday special

Sweet 16 in American culture is what is known as a "coming of age" event, when you are presented as a mature person. Different cultures have different times. Hispanic cultures celebrate quinceanea, or "15", which is when young girls are officially declared women. Jewish traditions of the barmitzvah/batmitzvah is the coming of age event for young boys or girls in that religion. Some tribal cultures have even more extreme rituals for their young people at younger ages. However, you only have one birthday a year- if it's special to you, MAKE it special- society shouldn't stop you from plannng and having the killer birthday you want!

Because it's ugly to give a 13-year-old that kind of a party. Sweet 16 is about romance and about presenting yourself to the world.

There's no reason you can't have a sweet 13 birthday or party. It's a special birthday.

Because there is nothing "sweet" about 13 year olds. They are in that frame of mind where everyone and everything is stupid and they know it all.
No offense to anyone. It is just my opinion.
