Does it matter were you get some practice in disputation? The internet is changing everything eventually I wouldn't be surprised if all political commentary and debate were held entirely on-line. Who knows this could be the wave of the future.

Fundamentals of communication lie in conversation. You say something, I say something back and so on. If you say "the sky is blue", I have the option of saying "why yes indeed it is blue" then the conversation likely will cease. If however I say "indeed the sky is blue but it is also shaded with gray as clouds are moving in" then the conversation continues and the possibility of dissention of the exact nature of the sky exists.

If we cannot debate the issues, then the exact nature of communication and the fundamentals of communication fall away.

The very idea that politics is rooted in debate over the issues sets up the structure of politics. If there is agreement on issues, there is no basis for discussion, expansion of ideas, additions to the base of the issues and no individual views expressed.

Politics is by it's very existence the platform from which discourse and debate flow. In politics everyone disagrees. We have to disagree. In political debate we use our core values and our passions to persuade and convert. That is politics.

I wholeheartedly disagree that people assume that the end all be all of politics is debate over issues. I subscribe to the view that politics is, in actuality, only that. Politics, like the law in it's application, is manipulation of facts, figures, data, semantics and persuasion to get others to follow you.

The problem is we don't talk about real issues. It is usually about some news event or how good a politician's performance has been. We need to talk about the REAL issues facing this country.

Maybe we are so dumbed down that the only thing that matters any more is who won American Idol. If so we are ripe for a dictator.
