The reality of what happened to Christ was actually worse than what was depicted in the film, but it is as close as film can get. The film left out the fact that he was spit on, slapped, punched in the face over and over, of course he was whipped, mocked, made fun of, abandoned by his closest friends and family, and the crazy thing is that he chose to allow it all. So, ya, it happened. He did it for you.

What you see in the movie is only minimally based on what is in the Bible. The Gospel writers merely say that Jesus was scourged, or chastised ("I [Pilate] will chastise him," Luke 23:16; "Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him," John 19:1; "But after having Jesus scourged, Pilate delivered Him to be crucified," Matthew 27:26). That's all the Bible says on the subject.
The endless scenes of beating and scourging in the movie are derived from the "Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ," a compilation of "visions" by a 19th-Century German nun, Anne Katherine Emmerich. For instance, the scene where the Sanhedrin guard, who have just arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, shove him off a bridge is nowhere found in the Bible. It is straight out of the "Dolorous Passion."
Certainly a scourging of any kind would be unpleasant, to say the least, but there is no evidence that the scenes in "The Passion of the Christ" occurred anywhere except in Emmerich's imagination.

The scriptures speak of Jesus being scourged by the Romans before his crucifixion. However, the severity of the scourging as depicted in the movie is speculative, since no details were given in the scriptures. The Romans weren't stupid, they can't really expect to flog half a man's skin off him, with great loss of blood, inducing probable shock and near death, and then get him to carry a 400 pound cross a mile across town and up a hill. This is all colorful embellishment built up over the years of Catholic tradition. Mel Gibson is an ultraconservative Catholic, so his movie follows more along the lines of Catholic lore rather than actual scripture.

Yes, it did. That type of punishment was very typical during that era. Also, the audience that the Roman soldiers had made it very difficult for the orders for punishment not to be carried out the the letter, and then some for spectator enjoyment as well as the sadistic tendencies one would have to have to be able to carry out such a task.
If they would put Christians in a pit to die by lions and watch that, why would you have a hard time believing the torture and beating of Jesus prior to his Crucifixion?

No one knows, for sure, what happened to Jesus, since the only writers were his devoted followers and others that became his devoted followers.
But, the simple answer is yes. The Bible says that he was scoured and also it was a classic punishment of the Romans at that time, so historically it would make a lot of sense.

yes it did happen, he allowed it to happen as he was taken on the sins of the world which was/and is many. omans were very clever people but also very cruel. In this country (UK) we were hanging, drawing and quartering people just for stealing bread!. Jesus had committed no crime, the Romans were frightened of Him. They wanted to rule the world and saw Jesus with His powers as a thorn in their side. If you are frightened of something eg a spider, then the natural reaction is to stamp on it and squash it, in effect you then gain control in your minds eye.

Yes, according to the Bible. He was whipped with a whip with bone in the end, which would shred the flesh. They also put a bag over his head and beat him and told him that if he was the son of God to say who was beating him. They spit on him. Many horrible things happened to him-so he could die-for us.
