Western Illinois University puts on one of the best public fossil expos in Macomb IL. It's done for this year, but if you aren't too far away it's worth planning to see next year. http://www.wiu.edu/newsrelease.sphp?release_id=5236
There are many rock and mineral clubs, most usually have a swap meet or show of some type about once per year.
Many colleges have free or cheap museums that display mineral specimens as well as fossils. One of my favorites is at the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City. There are similar displays scattered all over the country, you should be able to find one within a few hour drive for you.
Contact your state Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey, or Geological Society. Sometimes they have displays and some even have public field trips a few times per year.
Honestly though, at 5 years old your best bet is take him to a stream or just a pile of gravel and let him find the pretty rocks to collect. He'll eventually find something that makes him want to learn more about what it is and how it got there, and then he'll probably be hooked for life if he is able to find out what he has. Get him a book on rocks and minerals that's aimed at children, I don't think you can get Little Golden Books new anymore but I think they sell very cheap on Ebay and elsewhere, or I'm sure there are other publishers that have similar new books available still.
The museums and things like that may be more interesting for him in a few years, it all depends on his mind set.

I'm not sure about a show which will go specificly to encourage this interest, but many channels that deal with nature would help. Such as; animal planet, Discovery channel, or maybe even looking up movies that have people who have jobs dealing with nature. That hopefully will keep his interest in nature it's self. I have also seen books on rocks, minerals and things of that sort. I would either check on ebay, amazon.com, the library, or even a children's toy store (more educational based.) :) Good luck with your son, hopefully that will help him keep his hobby!

Yes, there are shows. My dad, in the 60s, took us kids to annual rock and mineral shows sponsored by his employer. (His employer no longer exists independently, but I'm sure that other "rock and mineral" clubs still exist and meet). Google around for
rock mineral club
and append your zip code to that.
The first thing to do is to take your child to your nearest science / natural history museum. Most of those will have a rock, mineral, and gem exhibit, including showing gold in its various natural forms.
Then take him to the local library, and check out some of the books in the children's section on geology, mineralogy, etc.

ok now answer this question. Does ANY new child or grownup choose to do homework and picture it is relaxing???? Heavens no. besides the undeniable fact that it "has" to be accomplished. seems such as you are able to desire to proceed sitting next to him and keeping him up together with his artwork, besides the undeniable fact that i might start up priceless him IF he does it in any respect. that could help with him prepared to get a "extra powerful" advantages. I propose start up small with the rewards..consistent with probability a celebrity on a chart and then on the top of the week a miles better advantages if he reaches 4 or extra stars. you do not point out his age even with the undeniable fact that and the age with homework is a biggie. genuine biggie. If he's youthful (8 or decrease than) then he desires an "instant" advantages for doing his homework. If he's older then he can wait till at last he accumlates stars. that's what we've accomplished for our son and while he's presented in from college he does homework ideal away. (not fortunately..yet he does it) because of the fact till that homework is finished, not something strikes or shakes with him. NO television, no exterior playtime, not something. G'luck with this and that i choose i could inform you that it gets extra powerful, besides the undeniable fact that it would not.

If you really want to get him interested take him to a local rock supply shop, where they sell rocks and rock hobby equipment like tumblers and polishers. Buy him a small rock tumbler.
