can't smoke in any public place.

Under the ban all pubs, clubs, cafes and workplaces - any public space with a roof over it - will become no-smoking areas.

According to the regulations a roof includes any type of awning or canvas - so converting a covered beer garden to a smoking room may not be an option for many pub landlords.

The total ban will extend to all enclosed areas except private homes, residential care homes, hospitals, prisons and hotel bedrooms.

Q&A: Ban on smoking in public
Smoking is to be banned in all enclosed public places in England, after MPs voted in favour of it in February 2006. What were the issues involved?

Where will smoking be banned?

Smoking in all public places like pubs, cinemas, offices, factories, public transport and so on will be banned.

When will the ban come into force?

Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt announced the ban would be enforced from 1 July 2007.

Where will you be able to smoke?

People will still be able to smoke outdoors, and in private homes, plus places that Ms Hewitt says are "like homes", such as care institutions, army barracks, and prisons.

What about private clubs?

The ban will apply there too. Calls for the private clubs and pubs serving food to be exempt from a ban were rejected.

you cant smoke in any public place or place of work with a roof over it. that includes work vehicles. i work for an installation company who's hq is in scotland. where the ban is already in place there. we were also told that if you are expecting workmen/women at your home you have to stop smoking 4 hours before they arrive as your home will then be their place of work. (but i'm not sure how true that is). you might consider that for your next question. good luck!

You can't smoke in confined public spaces like pubs and restaurants but you can smoke outside!
My fella went to pub yesterday to watch football and came back not smelling of ciggy smoke for a change! he said the landlord gets fined £2,500 if someone smokes in his pub!
PS I live in Wales!

You can smoke outside in the open. You can't smoke in enclosed areas where the smoke will be drawn in by other individuals that may be more concerned with their health and that of their children.
