Looking at a mirror you're always looking from one perspective. Photos catch you at different angles and different situations that you're not used to seeing.
It's like listening to your own voice on a tape recorder or video. Your voice is different when you hear it from a recording versus hearing yourself speak. That's because you're not used to the outside perspective.

It could be the type of film used, the lighting involved, the angle of the camera.
Since mirrors are designed to create a direct reflection (cameras are not designed for that purpose) I'd have to say a mirror provides a more accurate portrayal.

In short, a mirror shows you a laterally inverted version of yourself, thus looking better as you are used to it. But for photos, that is the actual way you look and how others see you.

Because in a mirror you see yourself. But in a photo a camara picks up every flaw and bad thing on you. A photo is more accurate it is the exact way you look. A mirror you don't see everything.

I think that it depends on who is taking the picture, my mom, who is AMAZING with photos always make me actually like my pictures, but when a friend takes my picture...well... it's generally unflattering. I think a mirror would be a truer form because you can't look in a mirror the wrong way, but you can take a picture wrong (like the facing the sun, or not enough light, etc.)

My opinion is that when we look at a mirror, we tend to see more of what we wish to see.
When I look a a photo of myself, I tend to feel the same way. I seem to look fatter and much less attractive than the mirror.
I'm not really sure why this is really, must be psychological !
I'm pretty sure that the photo is much more accurate of the way we look to others.

Sometimes mirrors have curves in them that change your face shape. Also you can look more closely at your face in a mirror than in a photo.

artificial lighting? I know what you mean. I don't want to toot my own horn, but I look like a super model in front of the mirror and then in pictures it's blah...I think the flash might brighten the face and make it look bad? I had a photographer take pictures of me at my wedding and I looked horrible, and I got another photographer for a family photo and I looked amazing.

I think the same thing, when I try to take my picture with my camera phone, it never looks as good as the pose in a mirror.
I say the mirror is right!

I guess you're like me and just not photogenic! I'll get ready and be like "I'm lookin' pretty good." Then my husband will take a picture and I'm like "THAT's what I look like?" *lol* I'd like to think that the mirror is more accurate!
