My suggestions lean towards the more 'boy-ish' series, like Yuu Yuu Hakushou, and what not. Also, if you don't mind a little romance, go for anything by CLAMP. I'm pretty sure /most/ of their works have been made into Anime, but don't quote me on that.
If you want something a little more comedic, try Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma 1/2 (Ranma Niibunnoichi) or InuYasha. (The manga is better, IMHO.)

Chobits- This guy found a girl chobit(robot) and finds out that she can control other things and her past
Fushigi Yugi- this girl is transported in the past where she is a preistess. she has to find the 12(?) warriors so that she can save the country.
Kyo Kara Maoh!- this guy gets transported to another world where he is the demon king. he had special magical powers but can only use them when he is turned into the real king.(which is when he is mad) they have to find four boxes that the great one and the wise man hid so that other countries(big cemeron) can;t get it and ruin the world.

the best anime series is Naruto because
1) if you like action this is the show for you because they are ninjas and the can produce fire and water from there hands
2)if you like a little blood Naruto is for you but i will say there is not a lot of blood just a little bit
3) once you watch one episode you can't stop watching a nother on and it has great action like i said be bfore
*P.S Naruto is on Toonami on cartoonnetwork*

they're the very best anime i've ever watched.
both have an interesting plot, good character development and a few un expected twists.
anyone else i know who's seen then really enjoyed them aswell.
