I would have to pick Leonard Cohen a canadian singer. I have a book of poetry of his and it was good so I bought his CD and that wasn't bad either. Nick cave is another good poet/writer, Jewel has a good poetry book and good lyrics. Tom Waites is really good to.

In my own opinion, I have to say Kris Kristofferson. This guy is an award winning song writer. In my own opinion, he is a Master lyrical poet.

Artist: Kris Kristofferson
Album: Easter Island
Title: The Sabre And The Rose

Feet hit the ground; feet leaving town
Quicker than a bullet or a knife
Falling ain't no fun when you're on the run
Honey we was runnin' for our life

When stagger lee had drunk his fill of moonlight
He turned his burnin' eyes upon my soul
"it's time, by god, to spend this night with someone else", he said.
"squeeze a little pleasure from the gold" (love & glory, children)
We can take it easy when we're old.

He said, "we'll take us into town, lay our money down
I'll bring you to the sweetest thing that grows
Because the fairest ones in sight are bloomin' every night at a tavern
Called the sabre and the rose."

We swang into the saddle slick as breathing
And slapped 'em once for pleasure with the reins
The horses snorted frosty in the moonlight
Somethin' dark was singing in my veins
Older than the voices in my brain.

He said, "this place you're gonna see is where they live and breathe
And sink down a little bit deeper every day
And sometimes at night, when the wind is runnin' right,
You can hear it suckin' thirty miles away"

Then the light was crimson and i found her,
All naked and eternal and insane
Sacred as the mysteries around her like a veil
Nothin' but her prison was profane
All we had in common was our chains.

Ah-burn it down boys
Burn it to the ground, boys
Burn it on down

Feet hit the ground; feet leaving town
Quicker than a bullet or a knife

All the way she ran holdin' to my hand
Runnin' for the river and our life
Slidin' from the moonlight into shadows
Silent as the river as it flows
Swimmin' to the place they'll never find us
All we left behind us was our clothes
And the stories, children.

Sing about the sabre and the the rose.

ANGELS & AIRWAVES

When all is said and done
Will we still feel pain inside?
Will the scars go away with night?
Try to smile for the morning light
It's like the best dream to have
Where every thing is not so bad
Every tear is so alone
Like God himself is coming home to say

I, I can do anything
If you want me here
And I can fix any thing
If you let me near
Where are those secrets now
That you're too scared to tell
I'd whisper them all aloud
So you can hear yourself

Green trees were the first sign
The deepest blue, the clearest sky
The silence came with the brightest eyes
And turned water into wine
The children ran to see
The parents stood in disbelief
And those who knew braced for the ride
The earth itself then came alive to say

I'm sorry I have to say it but you look like you're sad
Your smile is gone; I've noticed it bad
The cure is if you let in just a little more love
I promise you this, a little's enough

Tom Marshall, lyricist/collaborator for the band Phish. He has written some very ingenious lyrics that play with the actual sound s of the words unlike any other lyricist. Now the VOCALS are a whole different ballpark... Maynard James Keenan of Tool wears that crown.

Some of the older groups, oldies groups, really had a great deal of poetry and rhyme, for Example, the Everly Bros.
"I can make you mind
taste your lips of wine
anytime night or day
Only trouble is
Gee whiz
I'm dreaming my life away"

Sort of classic AABCCB rhyme pattern Check out also some of the Motown groups, 4 Tops, Temptations, O.J's, Jackson 5, etc.

i don't be attentive to exactly what you will possibly see as poetic. in case you propose that it makes use of phrases that create photos on your concepts, including 'paint it black' and stuff like that, then i might propose 'Breathe You In' by using Kutless. that's a slower music, besides the undeniable fact that it is honestly ideal. in case you propose poetic as in only only it rhymes and flows collectively in a musical trend, than might I propose 'Iris' by using the Goo Goo Dolls. :D

It's a toss up between Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Devics.
