Mac has just broken the limits on computer processing with its 8 core processing mac pros. So how long do you guys think it will be before windows or a windows affiliate will release a knock off of the mac pro? They hijack every other idea mac comes up with so why not this one?

Opinions on macs os and Windows Vista are also welcome, as long as play nice.

well this 8 core isnt exactly a consumer desktop. Its not meant to be one. It is a master at controlling massive work flow and graphic design/video editing/animations/ and HD renderings. This is why I see it as being so important. This is the system that is going to allow the slightly wealthy person create, organize, and publish everything in High Definition. Not many other systems can handle high definition graphics and renderings.

8 core is nice but will consumer applications actually start taking advantage of 2/4/8 core systems anytime soon? Don't get me wrong on multi-core systems, I'm all for the progression of hardware and operating systems. I just think in this case that the hardware has jumped ahead of software for the desktop systems in this case.

Microsoft should be glad that multi-core systems are coming out. It will give all the anti-virus applications a chance to continue protecting the system without making the system completely unusable.

As for multi-core or multi-cpu systems, operating systems have been able to handle it (although multi-core is a bit newer so handle is not specific to this) for a while, even Microsoft. The standard desktop version from Microsoft tended to only allow a single CPU or 1-2 CPUs. If you wanted to handle more processors, you had to get to Microsoft's server level operating systems (which until more recently was where multi-processor systems resided).

I'm still asking Santa for one of these systems with 128 SPARC64-V processors and 512GB RAM:

Josh G - The different extensions for MS Office 2007 are due to a change in the way documents are written. Microsoft has changed from their proprietary format to something a bit less proprietary, Microsoft Open Office XML. I say a bit less only because the specification required some patented Microsoft meta files. Microsoft Open Office XML is Microsoft's attempt to cut off support for the Open Document Format (ODF) that is supported by several Microsoft comptetors and open source supporters (link below provides more details).

Both Microsoft and Mac are simply two versions of the same old locked-in box.

If you want clustering with multi-processors, upto 50X faster, with true open access to all the source code, you would want to know and use the truly FREE and Open, *BSD and GNU/Linux distros, that make up over 500 different OSes, all FREE at http://livecdlist.com and http://distrowatch.com

I agree with u man! vista is a total rip-off! lol they copied every good thing from Mac! I love the way my iBook looks though, Microsoft can't copy that though. lol I love OS X. and why did they have to change all the file extensions on Office 2007!? (.doc becomes .docx, .ppt becomes .pptx etc) and my Office Mac won't open it! so now I am downloading neo office.

Thanks.

Apple vs. PC?...Again? I can't help but wonder if you Apple folks are trying to sell us something or rationalize a questionable purchase ! The sun will rise in the west before MS gives up. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
