For example, as far as same-sex marriage goes, I'm all for it and I'm arguing it right now. I know that there are some things perks married couples can recieve that civil union couples can't have, but I don't know what they are! Any thoughts?

Civil union does NOT grant the same rights. In a Civil Union there is no presumption of inheritance, as there is in marriage. In a Civil Union both people cannot adopt a child, only one of them can. The other party is just "the other person", not a parent under the law.

Civil union is minimal protection. Very minimal.

It's mainly a battle to elevate civil unions so they are indistinguishable from marriage. In the quest for two same-sex people to prove that one of them is really not of the same sex (more butch, more fem, more swish, whatever), they want to remove all indications that a relationship is between two of the same gender - even if inevitably, one tries to have a mustache and wear a toolbelt with her slacks) It's crap.
I'm all in favor of civil unions and I want to be able to marry a roommate who I hardly know but with whom I want certain benefits. As long as she's willing, what do I care?
I don't want it to be called a marriage. We aren't a man and a woman. We aren't even lesbos. But if the state has no business in my bedroom, then I want to be free to have nothing in my bedroom at all except the hetero boyfriends I bring home (this is hypothetical in the present tense but when I was single and living with female roommates, we could have used the health benefits from each other's jobs when we were uncertain about how our careers were going!)

Same sex couples don't have the same rights as married couples. Especially in things like the death or injury of a partner.. if they are married any compensation would go to the husband or wife.. if they are a same sex couple in a civil union then they don't get that same support.
