What is the record for a defenseman?

And for a forward?

Ice time has only been kept officially for the past few years, so there's no way of knowing.

It is very rare for a defenseman to get much beyond 30 minutes, though. I recall Al MacInnis having such nights in St. Louis, what with power play and regular shifts. Bourque played a ton of minutes too.

Forwards usually get less ice time, in part because there are 12 to choose from. Wayne Gretzky probably got close to 30 on some nights, as he sometimes played every other shift plus some special teams as the game went along.

Overtime games are obviously different.

I don't think they keep such records. I heard one year that the Bruins defense was hit by injuries Ray Borque was playing as much as 50 minutes a game. These days with 18 skaters dressed even defenseman rarely have to play more than 30 minutes. In the days of the "original 6" everyone had to play a lot longer. Sorry I'm not more help.

Sergei Zubov played over 55 minutes in the game last night between the Stars and the Canucks.

The time a player spent on the ice has definitely changed though. There used to onlt be 7 guys on a team just before the NHL formed and that means that those guys played almost the whole game.
