Personally I like laptops because they can be used as desktops and are portable.
Just close the lid and plug in a monitor and a keyboard and mouse and you have an instant desktop.

It depends on what you will be using it for. If you need it for work or school related things, a desk top may be the way to go because you'll have more memory capacity and two disk/CD drives. A desktop typically is more powerful, and is more comfortable to use because your can get an ergonomic keyboard. A laptop is less powerful and usually has only one disk/CD drive. The convenience is you can take it with you and work almost anywhere as long as you have a power source so you don't run the battery down. Whichever way you go, I highly recommend you get a Dell. Dell makes computers that are compatable with all software and hardware by other computer companies. If you buy anything other than a Dell, you could have problems running some programs and hardware on it because it is proprietary... it will only run programs that are manufactured by the same company or are compatable with software or hardware by that company. I have an HP laptop and a Dell desktop. My husband has both a Dell desktop and laptop. He never has problems with his laptop. I have problems with the HP because some programs won't run well on it or I get error messages when trying to run some programs. Go with a Dell.

Laptop can't match desktop performance and it's a lot more expensive than desktop. The only true advantage laptop has is mobility. Yes, you can hook up a printer to a laptop just like the desktop. Some laptops can have up to 4GB or RAM and that should be plenty for you. For your use you'll want a laptop that has a 17" screen or bigger since you also want to use it as a desktop replacement. It's hard to recommend a laptop for your family since i don't know what's your need, but you should take a look at the HP,Dell or Toshiba line. For Hp look at the dv9000 series, For Dell look at the Inspiron 1705 series and for Toshiba look at the P100-P105 series.

Desktops will always provide more bang for your buck, but laptops' mobility always rules.
Having a child is potentially hazadous to a laptop so look for a certified rugged one.
Since I work in Motorola's rugged laptop division, I'll point you to a Motorola ML900.
It's fully rugged, (water resistant drop resistant.)
Toutch screen, finger print reader, Pentium 4, DVD drive, backlit keyboard w/ light sensor, infared wireless connection, WIFI, gps, docking station, surround sound, shock mounted hard drive, radio, cell phone.
Pretty much everything.
And a heater and cooling system. Down to -80 degrees F, and up to about 180 degrees F.
Strong enough to be run over by a 2 ton truck and hit by a sledge hammer.
Virtually indestructable, except for on your wallet.
About $4000- starting.

If its your First Computer, Get Desk Top. If your A Noivce User and know How much computer will drop or change in coming years then Laptop.
Cause if you New or want to go with safe choice get DESKTOP. If you want to risk not having the latest graphics cards then go with LAPTOP......
If you get a Laptop. note that if Screen Cracks you have to buy another one... No company Covers that... and it cost 600 bucks to replace... same price as the laptop itself in some cases

i prefer laptops ... they can be used as a desktop .. and hook up to desktop devices (printers, speakers etc.) and then you can move from a desk .. to a sofa/ bed .. wirelessly ... i would go with a lap top ... u can spend more money to get a bigger sized memory also

No You can not hook up printers to laptops. Everyone that has a laptop can't print. Duh! Of course you can print off a laptop. Laptops are better because you can bring them to other peeps houses and around your house.
