It depends on the person I believe, I can never get away with it if I'm speaking to my mom or aunt's, but I have two friends who both can talk for hours without a response from me, but ya or uh huh.

One need to say "ya" or "uh huh" to inform the other one they actually ARE listening. Say nothing at all and see how it goes then!
