It means that there is very little chance of succeeding, or else that there is very little hope involved in it. When the Donner Party sent out its first group to try and cross the Sierra in winter they were described as "The Forlorn Hope", meaning they had very little chance of survival. Indeed, half of them died, mostly the men, and the other half were almost dead by the time they stumbled upon an occupied cabin.

It is a great word to use in poetry or in describing someones situation in a story or book. We don't want to be there in our own lives, however.
