I understand companies preferring less experienced and less expensive hirees. And I understand these firms ae looking to avoid discrimination charges. I just want to find a way to save time for myself and them so we can cut to the chase and find a place that appreciates what I (we) can do.
Forbes Magazine had an interesting piece about the search for older workers with an old-fashioned work ethic. But, in retrospect, it seems as tied to reality as a Reader's Digest article.
Any ideas?

Sadly, it is pretty common in the workplace. So do you just give up? No. There are things you can do to help fight this impression of mature applicants. Here is a link to tips that may help:
