I think they are more extreme than the old neocons who just had far right views.

Radical-Republan's add the element of actual anger and hate I've not heard from right-wing supporters of the past. They are ready to act against what they think is a threat to "their" way of life.

Would Barry Goldwater consider them a threat to the Republican party?

In the 90's, both parties moved toward the center, particularly in the presidential race. Since 9/11, both parties seem to be moving away from the center, staking out more and more extreme positions, and working more an more at cross purposes, just to hurt eachother rather than to help the country. Not a good trend, IMHO.

So, I think that is a 'yes,' sad to say.
