Is there any player who stands above the rest? I just need to know his name, and maybe a little about his achievements.

Wayne Gretzky is the best ever, but may not be as well known internationally. Jaromir Jagr is the leading scorer amongst Europeans in NHL history, having amassed 621 goals, 907 assists and 1,528 points so far in his illustrious NHL career while playing in 1,191 regular season games, while also scoring 67 goals, 88 assists and 155 points in 149 career playoff games in the NHL. In those regards, Jaromir Jagr might be the most internationally renown player ever. However, Gretzky does hold the NHL single season, career and playoff records, with 894 goals, 1,963 assists and 2,857 points in the regular season and 122 goals, 260 assists and 382 points in the playoffs, all of which are more than any other player in NHL history.

Ever? Gretzky. Everyone in the world knows who he is.

Currently? Probably Peter Forsberg. His success in the Olympics and the NHL has made him a superstar celebrity in Europe. He's freakin' enshrined on a Swedish stamp! Doesn't get any more famous than that!

at this moment or ever? anwser to the latter: wayne gertzky, canadian, became famous playing for the edmonton oilers along with jari kurri and someone else,... mario lemieux i think it was. gretzky is known as the great one, not the strongest skater ever but he saw the game like no other and had A LOT of awsome tricks up his sleeve no one had ever seen before. he has more records on his name than anyone else.
at this moment, i wouldn't really know. everyone knows marty brodeur of course, goalie of the new jersey devils. and peter forsberg, mats sundin and alexander ovechkin are very well known as well. perhaps even naslund, thornton or eric staal, but i think not.

Ever? Wayne Gretzkey. Big pointer (assists and goals) (most ever). Great player. (L.A. Kings)
Now? Sid the Kid (Sidney Crosby). Called the new Wayne Gretzkey. Major point scorer, led the team (Pitt. Penguins) to the playoffs. (REF/more info. Pittsburgh Penguins website or "page" on Yahoo.
