AVG Anti-Virus is free for PERSONAL use. That means if you use it at home on your home personal computer, then its free. If you use it at work in the office, then there are certain legal issues. You can download the free version at this link: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390#avg-anti-virus-free
This link shows a comparison between the free and paid versions: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-virus/us/crp/0
Note that as previous answers, there are paid versions of AVG that basically provide you with more support.
I've used McAfee, Norton, PC-Cilin, and AVG, individually and collectively over 10 PCs over the past 11 years. I am now using only AVG. Granted it doesn't always remove all the newest viruses the soonest, but give it a day or 2 and it will. Besides, all the anti-viruses are the same. Sometimes they get to resolve the latest virus first, sometimes they don't. Its always a race between who gets to resolve it first. Just so long as you know what you're doing when sending and receiving files, and when browsing the Internet to be careful which sites you're going to, you should be fine. Always always always scan unoriginal (translated as copied) discs or any data media before running and programs on them or opening any files from them. I've even found viruses in camera and mobile phone memory sticks in the past.

The short answer is it is free. The only problem is you have to make sure you download the free version. The pay version is also a "free download", but it is not the free version of the software. When you go to the sight, make sure you click on AVG Anti-Virus Free, than click on the download for the free version in the product comparison.

There are 2 versions of AVG Anti-virus - Free and Payed. Free is nice for low budget and will keep away any virus's. If you have spare cash and want that little extra protection, go with the payed. Its easier, faster and helps a lot more.
You can also try downloading different ones off of Microsoft webpage, but dont download anything from googled websites. They often put viru's IN anti-virus software

The AVG site is confusing in hopes you will buy the Professional version.
Go to this download site and you will get the free version without the confusion.

Although AVG is an adaquate Antivirus program it is not that good.
Active Virus Shield is a free service from AOL and uses the Kaspersky AV program. Kaspersky is one of the very best. In independent tests the Kaspersky detects and removes 99.62% of thousands of test viruses. AVG scores in the low 80% range. Here are the results of those tests.

Ms Dell.... How do you get that from the opening post?
And just how many AV's have you tried?
I *have to* use Norton on my work PC though I use AVG at home... AVG is far superior. I could use Norton at home - paid for, free, by my company. I much prefer AVG because even the free edition is better than Norton.
I also used to use Mcafee, a couple of years back, So I feel reasonably qualified to make a comparison.
AVG's free version is very good.
it is better than Norton

They have a free version, but they also have a pay version. The free version works great and is free for personal use.

It is. It is unclear that it is still free, however, when you upgrade the version number. Vagueness is sometimes good marketing.
