i'm watching seatlle getting ready with red sox. it's raining and conditions are getting colder and wetter. no chance this game is going to play . what about the fans. pay for parking and buying hot stuff. then the game is called. start season domes and war cities.

It's business. If they let you stay there waiting for a game you might buy a beer or a jersey and they still have to pay all there employess at the game so the mine as well make so money to do it.

It's a business sure and the other answers might have something to do with it (albeit sounding a little like conspiracy theories). But, as seen in the Cleveland/Seattle series of this last weekend, when it is absolutely evident in advance that a scheduled game cannot be played, it is cancelled early.
With computer modeling used for weather forecasting, sometimes there's a percentage chance that bad weather might clear in a few hours so that a game can resume/begin ... and management will always play the percentages, just for that off-chance.
I think there are two other "main" reasons. One, the Players' Association has exercised its muscle the last couple of years and curtailed the number of doubleheaders that are scheduled/played. Gone is the spirit of Ernie Banks' "Let's Play Two."
More important ... scheduling. With the extra games being played within the divisions, it greatly reduces the number of times non-divisional teams face each other (only one home/away series per season). If a game between non-divisional opponents is cancelled and it can't be worked into that same series' schedule as a double-header, it's now very difficult to find a later date when both teams are free (not even to bring up travel considerations involving bi-coastal play). In the past, it was usually possible to just add a game to the next series in which the teams faced one another.

It cost a lot of money to put a game on a field. Once it's in place, they want to make absolutely sure there's no way it can be played before they call it. Also, it gives the fans time to buy food and souvenirs so at least the stadium can re-coup some of the money.

Cancelling or postponing games can really suck. Since there are games practically every day for the next six months, it can be difficult to reschedule without having to do a doubleheader.

they want to make sure that the conditions are ok.. they dont want to make peopel come back so they want to make absolutly sure the game cannot be played
