In 1939, the English/French were in a propaganda battle with Germany called "the Phony War." England and France, plus Poland devised an agreement that if any of those three countries were attacked by Germany, they would all join the battle. In September of 1939, the propaganda stopped and Germany invaded Poland. The English and French were shocked, yet neither believed the Germans would try to attack them. In May 1940, the Germans broke through the French Maginot line and throught the Beligium Ardenne forest. The Germans then moved west and pinned the English/French Armies at Dunkirk. The English left continental Europe leaving the French surrounded and trapped. On the eastern front, the Germans lost the war during the Battle of Stalingrad. The Russians won in February 1943 and the Germans were in retreat. When the Russians finally entered Germany, they raped 2 million German women. Following the Battle of Berlin in April 1945, the Germans surrendered.

Labour Day weekend 1939 - mid-August 1945.
But you have to understand WWI and the Treaty of Versailles in order to have any clue about WWII. I'm giving you some links.
Past that, I'd suggest doing your own homework, starting with a visit to the public library. I don't let people cheat themselves by doing their homework for them.
