There are a lot of factors that go into why your computer is running slow after installing the Norton program.

The first thing to do is clean up your computer. If the HD was fragmented when you installed the program this could be causing the slow down. When programs are installed on the HD they are not placed in a single area. The program is broken up and placed in many different areas. You computer is constantly searching the HD to find the different parts of the program and running it. This will slow down your computer drastically. This is like the computer doing an Easter Egg hunt on the HD.

Another factor is the amount of RAM on your computer. Anything less than 512MB of RAM is bad. Preferrably 1GB of RAM. RAM is cheap and will speed up your computer.

Do these clean up steps and see if this help your computer.

Clean your Browser Cache:

IE 6:

Tools>Internet Options>General tab>Delete Cookies, Files (check mark the box for OFFline Content in the window that appears) and Clear History buttons.

IE 7:

Do as above and in the General Tab go to the Delete button in the Browsing History area. In the new window delete the above items.

Check your HD for Defragmenting:

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.

Clear Temp. Windows Files:

Exit all running programs, including browser, except your AV and AS programs. Exiting these might be necessary later (not usually).

Start>Run> type "%temp%" (no quotes)>OK>in the menu bar go to "Edit" click Select All>in the expanded menu select Delete or right click on the pane with the files highlighted and select Delete. When finished Close window.

Clear Prefetch Files:

Do as above but type PREFETCH instead.

Clear clutter in DSL modem (If used) and RAM:

You DSL Modem/Router can become cluttered and slow accessing Websites/pages.

Turn off the modem/router, computer and monitor in this order. Wait a minute or two and then restart in reverse order. Turning off he computer clears the RAM of clutter.

It is normal for a computer to be slower after installing Norton antivirus, but not a lot slower.

You might want to look into buying more memory, as Norton is probably eating up enough memory to cause your computer to dip into the paging file and that will slow the computer down a decent amount.

Sometimes your computer runs slowly because a lot of your programs start running as you log in your computer. So you can disabaled some of those programs and leave the programs run , the one you need. Go to start than go to Run type in the box msconfig then go to Start Up menu and disabled all of the programs besides any Antivirus programs. It is going to ask you to restore your computer, after that see how your computer works. If it is still slow, then you need to uninstall your norton antivirus. and try to re install again. GOOD LUCK

Yup Norton/Symantec strikes again. This has happened from time to time with Symantec(Norton) products. Get yourself something recomended here such as AVG Free or one of the others these guys talk about. Most are free and can be downloaded from the Web. They even work better then Norton. Then uninstall Norton and get your money back.
If you need links let me know.

Norton is a cumbersome program and honestly doesn't work as well as others. I would get rid of it and get AVG Antivirus...it's free and works great.

I personally don't think it is worth paying to get a virus scanner but i recommend Avg anti virus it is free and it runs smoothly no problems for me. But what you could do is try to uninstall it and then install it again.
And also you might look into buying more memory
