The history of Rome lasted about a thousand years. Early Rome was warlike and independent. The building of Rome began after it was made by its rulers a true empire, at the expense of other countries' citizens, about 134--129 BC.

Thereafter, its ruling classes got richer and built many buildings.
Over the centuries they built the Colosseum, the Great Racecourse, now the Piazza Navona, great Aqueducts such as the Cloaca Maxima, the Pantheon Temple to all the gods, the Senate, the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus,
the Temple of Janus, theaters, Great Baths, Fora, Triumphal Arches and the palatial homes of nobles,
barracks to house the Praetorian Guard, naval buildings at nearby Ostia, the port of Rome, columbaria or Libraries and Vias or roads, their most lasting contruction.

Important buildings are in the eye of the beholder. The Curia (senate house) was quite important, and still stands today. Also, the Pantheon is an amazing piece of architecture that was the first use of concrete for a domed building. Some other important buildings were the Temple of Jupiter and The Colosseum.
