In addition to the above, Romans also invented the vaulted ceiling, which is a series of arches. Romans also were good surveyors and could measure a slight and precise slope from miles away. However, they could not survey curves so all their roads are strait with 90 degree turns.

John had a good answer! They were clever boogers, and realized the importance of the arch, and the keystone, they also were really great at math,and air flow, water flow, and invented the toilet, ( still there) i do not believe the thing about roads,,too much common sense there, to ignore. I do wonder why they wanted massive buildings. Had to be a bit cold!, yet,their bath houses were a masterpeice in air flow, and temperature control,,,,I USE THAT THEORY MYSELF!

The key is the arch. It's in the Pantheon and in all of their bridges and water systems. It's all about the arch. You might add the column to this, but it was perhaps more Greek.
