(x + 18)(x + 2) = 0
x = -18 or x = -2.

Easiest way to do this one is by factoring...

we need 2 numbers that multiply to get 36 and add to get 20, our numbers are 18 and 2, so we do this

x^2 + 20x + 36 = 0
(x + 18)(x + 2) = 0

By the zero product rule, x + 18 = 0 or x + 2 = 0, so we solve our 2 equations....
x + 18 = 0 x + 2 = 0
x = - 18 x = -2

so, our 2 solutions are x = -2 or x = -18

2007-04-12 15:14:05 · answer #2 · answered by Anthony T 3 · 0 0

x^2 + 20x + 36 = 0

x^2 + 2x*10 + 100 - 100 + 36 = 0

(x + 10)^2 - 64 = 0

(x + 10 - 8)(x + 10 + 8) = 0

(x + 2)(x + 18) = 0

x1 = -2
x2 = -18

x^2+20x+36=0

First factor it

(x+2)(x+18) set each equal to 0

x+2 = 0 subtract 2 from both sides

x = -2

x+18 = 0 subtract 18 from both sides

x = -18

Then check your answer by putting -2 and - 18 back into
x^2+20x+36=0 for x to see if its true.

(-2)^2+20(-2)+36=0 True

(-18)^2+20(-18)+36=0 True

First, try to factor, then use the zero property rule.
(x+18)(x+2) = 0
so either x+18 = 0 or x+2 = 0
answers are x= -18 or x = -2

If you did not figure out the factors, you can always resort to the quadratic formula, which recall is
x = (-b+/-sqrt(b^2-4ac) ) / (2a)

For your problem a=1 b=20 and c=36

x = (-20 +/- sqrt(400-4(1)(36)) / (2)
simplify:
= (-20 +/- rt (256) ) /(2)
=(-20 +/- 16 ) / 2
= -36/2 OR -4/2
= -18 OR -2

either method, you will get the same result.

x^2 + 20x + 36 = 0

(x + 2)(x + 18) = 0

x + 2 = 0 or x + 18 = 0

x = -2 or -18

factor: what multiplied together gives you 36,
1 , 36
2, 18
3, 12
4, 9
6, 6

but added together gives you 20? 2 and 18
(future note: if you can not factor, use quadratic formula)

so (x + 2)(x + 18) = 0
set each parenthesis equal to zero and solve for x: x = -18, x = -2

There are many websites online which solve quadratic equations for you :D!!! (Okay, If you are learning this for school, I suggest you actually learn and try it on your own).
