It is impossible to comapre players from the past with modern day. Players in the past played at a slower, less athletic, pace and on many ocasions on much worse pitches then we have today. You put a Pele in the modern game and he might not have been so great. You put a C. Ronaldo on the crap pitches Pele played on in 1958 and he will most likely end up breaking a bone on them maybe ending his career. Comparing players from different generations is impossible.
Then there is the question does the best player need to be able to tackle, or just put the ball in the back of the net?
Of the current crop of players available the easy choice would be Ronaldinho world player of the year back to back and probably a third time had Brazil won the World cup. Leauge prefornances this season C. Ronaldo is up there so is Drogba.

When saying "greatest" its difficult to compare a striker to say a midfielder as they play different roles within a game of football. Many people would tend to be biased towards the strikers because they usually get the goals which is the best part of football but mid fielders who can pass accurately should also be considered on the same level as strikers in terms of talent. My personal opinion would probably have to be Pele because he was just a class striker although these days football is much harder as the average talent of players has increased dramatically and to see Messi do what he does in contemporary football is truly amazing!

Diego Maradona is the best soccer player I have ever seen. He was essencial for Argentina to win Mexico 86 World Cup. I prefer him than Pele because he played in modern times, while Pele played in a more amateur era and had great teammates like Tostao, Garrincha, Rivelino that where almost as good as him. Maradona was the only real star in that argentinian team.

the obvious is pele, beckanbaur,Cruyff, Ronaldinho, C.Ronaldo and Zidane
but i remember just how fanstastic Georgie Hagi and Hristo Stoitchkov were, theres no doubt in my mind if either of these guys played for a more successful country theyd be amongst the greats.

the greatest would have to be the brazilian star Ronaldo. he does have the most goals ever scored in world cup, and made 2 straight world cup finals appearance. he was also winner of golden shoe for being top scorer.
