I haven't seen or heard any confirmed reports of 10 years, but I have seen lab results indicating 7 years + and have kept a bettas that long myself. Typically though 4-5 years is a good lifespan for betta splendens.

Depending on care and when they are purchased, they can live to be 8 years old. Many people who have kept bettas for a long time may say that we dont know what we are talking about, but I personally kept a fish alive for 5 years. He was purchased at about 1yr old from a walmart(most male bettas are 1 yr old, its when their fins and colors are the best).
Bettas kept in labs with daily exercise and large tanks have lived to be 10 years old!
It depends on care and size of tanks. I suggest a minimum of 5 gallons, as they will benefit from the 'extra' space. I keep a betta in my 55gal tank with south american fish, but he gets kind of stressed from all the other fish. I suggest keeping them in large flat front/back bowls. I have a 2gal bowl with a betta, two ghost shrimp, and a snail. The betta loves the shrimp(not as food but as ccompanions) and the shrimp clean up every last scrap of food on the bottom.
Never keep two males together, but three or more females can be kept together in a larger tank.(they create a pecking order and if kept in twos, one or both fish will die from constant fighting).

Mine lived about 2.5 years we think, as got him and he was pretty big! You must of had a great fish and must have taken a great care for him! That's a great age, the normal age is 2-4 years, and I think the 4 is VERY rare! My fish would've lived longer, but he developed Fin Rot, sadly he passed away. But now I have a baby crowntail and a baby halfmoon on his way!

On an average, it's 3 years. 10 years? Oops, my dear Sputz, I don't think that's realistic enough. Maybe she's not keeping those regular bettas that we keep, originally from SE Asia..
Betta are hardy, can survive w/o filter, small space needed, shorter lifespan. It's a ideal fish to start off with if you, or your kids are keen on making fish-keeping your new hobby.
Cheers
