Get rid of Norton! I had the same problem a few years ago. It made my computer so slow that it took me 3 hours to finally uninstall it! Call local computer repair stores and most will put on a free and much better anti-virus on that doesnt slow your computer at all

The active-scanning functions of Norton take up some memory and CPU cycles. The only way to do it without uninstalling Norton would be to disable the active-scanning functions. Though this is not recommended.

Every program you install on your computer will slow it down, and Norton is perhaps the slowest anti-virus program on the market. AVG anti-virus is a free alternative that runs much more quickly, and is actually a more effective tool.

Get rid of it! Norton is no good. I had to go to Staples and get some sort of special cd so that it would be out of my computer for good. Just uninstalling it doesn't work.
I use AVG now.

i have the same problem, antivirus programs and firwalls generally take up a lot of recourses and slow the computer down a lot. i used a startup mechanic to stop it starting and stop any of the compnents starting. so then i can just scan it once in a while to make sure that there are no viruses!

Get rid of Norton, it's cumbersome and really doesn't work that well anyway. I use TrendMicro PC-Cillin, but AVG is free and is very good as well.
