exe stands for "executable". It is a file that contains machine level code used by a computer to actually run a program. It is the instruction the PC uses to do what the program does. It is totally un-understandable to humans.
A program is usually written in a language like C++ or Java which humans understand. Then a "complier" is used to convert the program into the 0's and 1's the computer needs to run it. The complied file is the "exe".

EXE stands for executable file. These are programs or applications you can run on your PC. If you don't know where an .exe file came from, be cautious about running it, as it could potentially be a virus which could harm your machine. On the other hand, it could be a fun new screensaver or a game.

a .exe file is a compiled and ready to execute computer program. care should be taken when deleting unknown .exe files and never run one if you don't know where it came from.
Your computer assumes if you ask a program to run you know what it is designed to do, and this isn't always the case.
