do you mean that people's views on communism were largely skewed? And that people's views were narrowed, their ability to control things were narrowed thanks to popular soverigty?
During the Cold war politicians were one of the many people who narrowed our views. How exactly did they do this?

The Mcarthy age, if anyone was for communism they were unpatriotic. Any one could be called a communist for no reason.

Because it wasnt that communists were evil, or that stalin was just a nasty person...the fact was capitalism and communism just dont go together. Communism wouldn't give any trade to our corporattions, etc and this was a lost investment. Therefore we tried to get them to become soverign, and tried to make them feel bullied. Hope this helps you.

Do you mean beyond the fact that communists loved to kill everyone who disagreed with them, leading to Stalin killing more than 20 million of his own people; or that it denies basic human needs and desires (if you would hard you will receive the benefits of your efforts) in favor of basic human weaknesses (let someone else do the work); or that it was always trying to enforce its will on someone else? Oh, there are so very many other reasons as well ... it is inefficient, self-serving, dictatorial and inflexible, just to name a few things ... or, in short, as Reagan suggested, it simply doesn't work!
