This is a word problem in basic algebra. Any help solving it is greatly appreciated.

I think the answerer above me misread the question (it's kinda poorly worded, though, for what that's worth).

The 19.56 discount is 20 percent of the original price.

At any rate, if 19.56 is 20%, then 100% is five times that. And 80%, the actual sale price, is four times 20%.

x = 4*19.56

x = 78.24

And, for what it's worth, the original price was 97.80

100 x 19.56 / 20 = $97.80

I've always done these like this:
20 is to 19.56
as
100 is to x

or
20 / 100 = 19.56 / X
20 = 1956 / X
20X = 1956
X = 1956 / 20
X = 97.80

19.56/x = 20/100

20x=1956
x=1956/20=$97.80

0.20x = 19.56
x is the original price
Solve for x.

x = $97.80
x - 19.56 = sale price

Sale Price = $78.24

Let the original prize be x
x-0.2x=19.56
=>x=24.45$
sale price=4.89
