They lived much shorter lives ....usually not much beyond 50. Their daily lives were filled with toil. Chistianinty reaches us through the "Roman" Catholic Church. Aside from it having been politically expedient to maintain the cultural "empire" thusly as the seat of goverment , Rome itself , was usurped from without ..the folks of the time jumped at the chance to earn a wonderful life in the hereafter. And so, they were people like us, but with very very little hope of social mobility.
A common Roman epitaph, " I am not. I was not. And I don't care." would seem to paraphrase a certain fatalistic hopelessness. Those in the aristocratic class were the shakers and movers....but the vast majority lived in drudgery, albeit better to be a Roman citizen than not. The Jews were the exception .....their own system worked better for them than being a part of the empire. Other peoples were oft exploited in thier own land by ruthless despots. Becoming a Roman citizen while the local culture became part of the empire was a boon to the economy and standard of living...a synergism.
A few thing that got better : .....roads....art ....commerce....rational law....shucks, maybe one day your son might become a Leagonaire !

The romans used aquaducts to provide clean water into its cities. The men also shaved.

They were proud of their "civilized" ways and had a term for those not like them. We still use the word today - barbarian.

They were probably more than a little "stuck up".

Probably like Americans, thought they were the centre of the universe, and ran around slaughtering people that never did anything to them, all in the name of progress.
