When I boot my PC, I get the following error:-
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom.

Press 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

Firstly, I don't have the start up CD!
I have tried restarting in safe mode by rebooting and pressing F8. This only takes me back to the screen above.

All this started after I downloaded the Windows validation update recently which says my copy is not valid!

I can't help but think this is connected somehow.

I puchased the PC with a valid Windows ME registry key but I can't find the original CD. I then borrowed an XP upgrade CD which was obviously not legal but It seems too much of a coincidence that now I am left with this issue after downloading the recent update.

Any help would be appreciated.
Just need to get the PC to boot up in order for me to investigate more.

ErrorSafe pretends to be an antivirus programm. It mainly appears in connection with a Smitfraud-C infection and is praised on a blue screen. Having installed the software one has to accept an insufficient Privacy. There is no button to deny this privacy. A scan with ErrorSafe reveals several problems that allegedly need to be removed urgently in order to rescue the computer. At this point the user is requested to buy the whole program for an unacceptable price.

Yeah this is obviously due to a software change, if you have another computer, make a boot disk by putting a floppy or cd into the drive, right click and format to an ms-dos disc. put this disk into the busted computer.
If this doesnt work, ask a friend for a windows disc

THe validation is definatley key in this problem.

If i were you, I'd looke for an install disk for WIndows ME on ebay or something. Reinstall Windows (do not format, merely reinstall windows over hte top of the current installation.)

I have a simple solution to this if the windows used to work before. If it does restart your computer and start pressing F8. Then it will go to a screen there select "Last known best configuration" after that the windows should start. After that i Highly suggest using system restore.
