I always say the truth is best even though it may hurt. you did what you thought was at the time the right thing. Now you are questioning if you did the right thing. Perhaps you should explain you didn't want him to be hurt. I dont know if you have ever discussed death with him but that is up to the individual to do so. If the pet goes to heaven or elsewhere (what ever your beliefs). Honesty and explain you fibbed (not out right lied) to keep him from being the hurt one (because you love him and one day he will understand). Kids are more resilliant than we are led to believe and sometimes can handle a lot more than we can. If you suspect and he has yet to say anything, he may harbor certain feelings, then again as he gets older he may come to realize you did it because you loved him. Either way is up to you, but I think the truth is best.
Good luck!

This is an age where small fibs are almost alright. Tell him that sometimes a fish will change its looks when the sun gets on them. Or tell him that it may have had a birthday. They may change on their birthday. There are a few things that you could say. If you don't make a huge deal out of it things will be fine.

Let him know what happen, and tell him that death is a sad part of life, but that his little fishy is in a good place swimming and playing! Tell him that you bought him a new one to help him feel better. Let him know that you will do whatever you can to help him get over the loss.

I say tell him the truth. Explain that all living things eventually die and that you didn't want him to miss his fish so you got him a new one. You might consider admitting it was a mistake if you feel that it was. Most young kids will accept facts of life pretty well in my experience. Best of luck with your decision.

Fish and other small pets is how young children learn about death. This would be a great opportunity to have a talk with him about life and death.

Admit your mistake and why you did it. Why did you do that anyway? It sounds like an idea you got from a sitcom or something!
