I am a journalist for a local newspaper in Texas. We don't make really good money. But we write because there is something greater than that. Having your name for everyone to see is a good feeling that comes with its own responsibilites.
As a writer never plan on going higher that $40,000. Editorships make better money. Copy editors do too.

Some make a lot - say Katie Couric and her $11+M a year she gets. Some make dog dodo - like a sports reporter for the Exeter, NH Eagle.

an entry level print journalist can $30,000. It can even be less than this in some markets. You really have to gain some experience before you will make much money.
