I think its a beautifully written book which explores racism on one level, but also how our views of others are shaped. Scout was afraid of Boo Radley based on "history", and he ended up saving her life...Atticus was representing a black man who was obviously NOT a killer...a man condemned because he was black.

I think it was made very obvious with Boo coming to the girl's rescue, as well as the outcome of the court case. The main theme seems to be, don't be too quick to judge other people.
Oh, and also in the girl finding out that Atticus was the best shot around.
Don't remember the girl's name, it's been about 30 years since I read the book. So I think I am doing darned well, thank you.
But these are just my opinions, your actual mileage may vary.
Also, if you liked that book you must read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. I really liked Mockingbird but Roll of Thunder is ten times better, in my opinion.

the genre is non-fiction and the theme is to walk in someone elses shoes and view their life from there until judging a person. That is what Atticus always tells his children and that is mostly the theme.

I liked the book To Kill A Mockingbird but its hard to understand if you read it alone its better to read it with a group of people and discuss after each chapter on whats happening.

The film?
About unlikely heroes and a coming of age.
A be-speckled lawyer named "Atticus", a big shy man
named "Boo" who hides behind doors and plays little
games with children as seen by a young girl (Tomboy)
named "Scout" growing up in a big, bad world.
(Racism and Demons)
Fabulous B/W film (1962) released unblinkingly when
the Civil Rights Movement was changing the planet and
earned Gregory Peck an Academy Award.
Harper Lee's "Southern Gothic" novel, won the Pulitzer
Prize the year before and became a high school staple.
Powerful themes and a beautiful book.

Seems a little slow now, but the world was changing fast.

The most important theme of To Kill a Mockingbird is the book’s exploration of the moral nature of human beings that is, whether people are essentially good or essentially evil. The novel questions this by dramatizing Scout and Jem’s transition from a perspective of childhood innocence, in which they assume that people are good because they have never seen evil, to a more adult perspective, in which they have confronted evil and must incorporate it into their understanding of the world. As a result of this innocence to experience, one of the book’s important subthemes involves the threat that hatred, prejudice, and ignorance pose to the innocent: people such as Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are not prepared for the evil that they encounter, and, as a result, they are destroyed.

Neat story for you if you like the book. It is mostly about racism and the struggles in the South years ago. The interesting part is that I work in the hometown of the Author. Mrs. Harper Lee. I also coached her great grandson in little league baseball. I have 5 autographed copies of the 35th anniversary issue of the book.

I thought the book and film were excellent. The theme was hatred based on bigotry and ignorance as seen thru the eyes of two innocent children and the role model of their wise and caring father.
