m=(1-3)/(4--5)=-2/9

y=mx+c=-2/9x+c

Use similar triangles to find intercept.
5/(3-c) = 4/(c-1)
5*(c-1)=4*(3-c)
5c-5=12-4c
9c=17
c=17/9

y=-2/9x+17/9

start with equation of linear function: y=ax+b
points (x,y): (-5,3) and (4,1)
thus
3=a*(-5)+b and 1=a*4+b
3=(-5a)+b and 1=4a+b

3+5a=b thus: 1=4a+3+5a
1=9a+3
1-3=9a
-2=9a |9
-2/9=a thus:
3+5*(-2/9)=b
3+(-10/9)=b
3+(-1 1/9)=b
1 8/9=b or if you prefer 17/9=b

the equation is: y=(-2/9)*x+ 17/9

lets check:
for (-5,3):
3= (-2/9)* (-5) + 17/9
3= 10/9+ 17/9
3= 27/9
3=3 true

for (4,1):
1= (-2/9)*4 + 17/9
1= (-8/9)+ 17/9
1= 9/9
1=1 true

The slope of the line is (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1) = (-2 - 3) / (4 - (-a million)) = -5 / 5 = -a million. So the equation is in the form of y = -x + b. to locate the y-intercept (b), plug in a level and sparkling up for it: 3 = -a million*(-a million) + b 3 = a million + b b = 2 So the equation is y = -x + 2

y=ax+b you must found a and b

3 = -5 a+b
1= 4a+b

y = -4x +17

-4 slope, 17 intercept
