So how much will it cost me and most importantly on average how long will it take? I will have to make the opening and frame the window then install the window. Or would it be better to hire a contractor, but if i do on average how much will they charge me?

It can all Depend on the siding on the out site of the house and the surface on the inside of the house if it is drywall on the inside then this may not be that difficult. you simply remove the drywall where you want to install the window frame the rough opening for the window Leaving you to cut out the exterior surface and install the window. the only thing you Will have to do next is trim out the window on the outside. Vinyl can be cut out and use j channel or wood, brick Could be trimmed out in aluminum , or wood.

As far as cost go to do it yourself you could be looking at a couple of 2x4 a window and a couple of pieces of trim

I would say about $200

A contractor my be anywhere from 400 to 600

Total Project time 2.5 Days For a contractor i would give yourself 3.5 days to get it done

one day to remove and frame opening
one day to cut the hole out and install window
one day to repair drywall and trim the outside of the window
half a day to paint

longest part would be fixing the drywall on the inside

the big question is what is the exterior of your house?? if it's vinyl siding the job isn't too difficult if it brick or stone hire someone is your wall 2x4 or 2x6 what's the interior? drywall? plaster? tile?. Does anything have to be moved ?electric/plumbing. But if it's vinyl siding and drywall 2x4 walls it's not too hard would take about 4 hours and about $250 depending on window cost.

Depending on what you go with for a window( cheap or expensive) You could do it your self for about $100. If you know what your doing, it would probably only take a couple of hours. Don't over cut your hole. Make it just big enough for your framing. It'll save you a lot of time on drywall, later, when you can just cover it with trim.

whenever you ask yourself weathter to hire a contractor you probably should. for instance are you familiar with structural load requirements to size and add a header as well as king and jack studs? best case scenario using a quality window, siding, drywall, paint and structural requirements you are between 1200- 2000 dollars for a quality job done right good luck do it right the first time

how good are you with a saws all? i would charge about 900.00 to pop a window in a non bearing wall. and complete work in a day, (not counting dry wall repair).

um hire a contractor!
